Homemade Deoderant

I’ve been toying with the idea of homemade deoderant for a long time.  There are so many chemicals in that store-bought stuff, and we’re always looking for ways to go more natural.  I think I’ve pinned about 6 different versions of it, and most of them use a combination of coconut oil, cornstarch and baking soda.  This one seemed the most simple, and what I liked about it is that it makes a small amount – I just want to try it out and see what it’s like, without making a huge batch.

Her recipe is just 2 Tbsp of baking soda and 2 Tbsp of cornstarch.  Mix together and add 3 Tbsp coconut oil (softened).  I also added some lavender essential oil.

It made a small amount – enough to fill the trial-sized deoderant container and a small cosmetic container.  I’m not sure which application method will work best – using the deoderant container, or just applying by hand.

Again, head over here for the original post.

Update: It’s been about a week now since started with it.  I’ve used it for every day use as well as when I go for a run.  It’s important to note that it is a deoderant and not an antipersperant.  I do sweat some, but I don’t notice any odour.  I like the fact that it’s a natural product, and I don’t cringe everytime I put it on like I used to.  If you’ve used homemade deoderant, let me know your recipe and what you think!

  1. Dear Jenn,

Came across your website, and I love it! Keep up the good work!

I have been looking for a natural deodorant too, and love how simple this one is! I immediately thought of adding some drops of the Indian Jasmine perfume oil from Body Shop that I adore, but then I realised that the coconut oil won’t stay thick/hard in the Delhi summer climate!! Do you have any idea what can substitute coconut oil? Either I make a batch and get a liquid roll-on type bottle! :/

    • That’s a good question! I wonder if the addition of the baking soda will keep it solid enough? Try it and see!

Thanks for stopping by, and for your kind words!! 🙂
