This past school year was my first as a parent, which means that I was a newbie to all of those School Spirit days – chief amongst them being Crazy Hair Day.
I feel like crazy hair days are easy to approach with girls. Just put their hair in a million braids or ponies and add some ribbons. Voila! Crazy.
But for boys with short hair? His hair wasn’t long enough to spike. What’s to be done, other than put them in a wig?
I thought about hair spray dye, but didn’t want to spend $10 or Crazy Hair Day. I thought about Kool-Aid hair dye, but I didn’t want my guy to have to live with the coloured hair for two weeks.
And then, I thought…. Crayola markers are washable, right? That’s their big selling feature! How bad could it really go?
So out came the markers – we decided to do a rainbow pattern.
We literally just coloured his hair with markers, and then sprayed it with hairspray to seal in the colour – it was drizzling, and I was afraid his face would be dyed by the time we got to school with the run-off!!
Now, Crazy Hair Day ended up being a long day out of the house for various reasons, so we didn’t have the chance to wash his hair before bed. If we had, perhaps the end result would have been different. As it was, the Red and the Purple didn’t wash out for about a week, though it wasn’t very bright after the first wash.
This is an experiment we’ll definitely repeat for this year’s Crazy Hair Day!
