That Time I Set My Oven On Fire

It’s been a busy and long day. I know that because I have 13,479 steps on my FitBit and I wasn’t even trying today – whereas I usually clock in at about 10,000 these days unless I push it.

We had arranged to have friends over for dinner – a date that we’ve been trying to set since New Year’s Eve – and since I wasn’t planning anything fancy for the main course, and since we had just been apple picking yesterday, I thought that a fresh apple pie would be absolutely delightful on a chilly fall evening!

I came across this delicious sounding apple pie recipe from AllRecipes so I thought I’d give it a shot. The comments warned that the pie would spill over while working, so I lined a cookie sheet with parchment paper and put it under the pies in the oven.

Not five minutes after the pies started baking, the dripping started. Good, I thought, I’m glad that I put the cookie sheet in there!

However, with 8 minutes left on the timer, I noticed that the kitchen was starting to get really smokey. Perhaps unwisely, I opened the oven to see if there was a fire. There wasn’t. At least, not until I closed the door of. Then there was a LOT of fire. In my oven. In my house. It started on the element when some of the sugary mixture dripped past the cookie sheet (apparently I didn’t align it well) onto the element just as I infused the space with a fresh supply of oxygen. The flame shot up and lit the parchment paper on fire.

I, in turn, called my husband into the kitchen, whereupon he grabbed the fire extinguisher and we watched the fire through the closed door. I think that he was hoping to get to use the extinguisher. I was desperately hoping that my pretty apple pies were not going to be sent straight to the garbage!

Lucky for all of us, the flames burned out as the oxygen burned up, and after a few minutes I was able to retrieve my pie from the oven no worse for wear.

Lattice Top Apple Pie

I learned one very important lesson tonight: I need to learn how to use a fire extinguisher.

  1. I don’t know if we even have one. I should look into that.

  2. Wow, your apple pies look great despite being through a fire! It is amazing how fast it can happen!

    • Thanks, Maureen! 🙂 This is actually my first ever attempt at an apple pie – and I thought that the lattice crust would be difficult, but it was actually easier than fitting a top pie crust on nicely! #whoknew

  3. Wow – that could have been scary! Your pie turned out amazingly though! Did it taste as good as it looks??! I might need to grab that recipe off of you if so!

  4. I could actually write a similar post but mine would be called ‘That Time i set my Hand on Fire’. Seriously.

  5. Gosh! I’ve had a panic over my stove catching fire, too! Turns out I don’t respond well to fires with any level of sanity. http://thebigtodolist.com/stove-catches-fire/
    Glad your pies were okay!!

  6. Oh no – glad the pie was saved and the fire was contained to the oven. I have experienced apple pie drip many times….thankfully, it has always missed the element and landed on the bottom of the oven….
