You Pinspire Me
My little guy turned two last month, and since Daddy had a birthday with a cake and a song in December, H was really looking forward to his own!
I wasn’t really sure how to decorate his cake – he’d totally be into an Elmo cake, but I hate to put so much red food colouring into the icing to make it the right colour. He’d also love a tractor cake (or anything from Bob the Builder!) but that seemed a little complicated, so I was stumped. And then it hit me: a snowman! I’ve posted on this blog before about how much he adores snowmen these days, and a quick Google image search assured me that it could, indeed, be an easy and simple task! (I used Reece’s Mini Peanut Butter Cups and sour ribbon to decorate. The cake was gluten-free – I used this recipe, and it was really yummy! It’s a bit more fragile to handle than regular cake, but it rose – a lot! I cut each cake in half and spread strawberry jam in the middle before putting the top back on. I also used the small and medium springform pan from my set, so that I’d have a smaller and a larger size for my snowman.)
We had a small gathering of people over to celebrate on Family Day, so I thought I should throw up some decorations, too. I used Royal Chinet paper plates to make a snowman garland and a happy birthday garland – it was so easy! I picked up a 1″ circle punch at Micheal’s with a 50% off coupon, and it made cutting all those black dots out a LOT faster and easier! 😉
This Christmas, Hendrik received a few snowmen from people who know and love him, so I used those to decorate the table. I used plain brown paper bags for the goodie bags, and just drew snowmen on them with a silver Sharpie.
To round out the decorations, I picked up some blue and white balloons and streamers from the dollar store, and my mom very kindly helped me decorate the livingroom!
We ended up only having two other little kids at the party, so I didn’t do any games. If we had more rsvp, though, I would have prepared a “Pin-the-carrot-on-Frosty” game, as well as bring some snow inside in large rubbermaid containers for the kids to play with and make small snowmen of their own. (If there was no snow outside, I would have made ‘snow’ in the food processor with this method! Check it out!)
