I try to observe Remembrance Day at home with the kids as much as I can. We make our own poppy of some sort or another (check out the ones we made last year!), and we sing the song that I learned in Elementary School – Soldiers, & Sailors, & Airmen, Too; we turn on the TV and watch some of the Ottawa service, and we talk about what it all means.
This year, we made a Poppy Bouquet out of egg cartons. Thanks so much to Jen Goode at Projects for Preschoolers for the pinspiration!
On a difficulty scale from 1-10, I’d rate this craft about a 4 – but the preschooler is pretty much just in for the painting – the other 3 steps are all you. 🙂
Supplies needed:
- 1 egg carton (bottom, only)
- scissors
- red paint
- paint brushes
- green pipe cleaners
- 12 black or brown buttons
- Cut apart the cells of the egg carton & trim each one down so that they’re level all the way around.
- Have your child paint the inside and the outside of the cells red, turn upside down on a piece of paper and let dry.
- Draw a pipe cleaner up through the bottom of the first button hole and then down through the opposite hole, twisting the excess pipe cleaner around the ‘stem’.
- Poke a small hole in the center of a dried, painted flower, and insert the pipe cleaner/button stem in from the top of the egg carton and pull until the button is resting in the centre of the cell.
- With a scissor, make four inscisions from the top of the cell towards the centre, creating four petals.
