The Secret Life of a Blogger

Alright, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that not all bloggers are like this – but the more time I spend on crafts & snacks with the kids, taking pictures for the blog posts, and then actually writing up the blog posts, the less time I spend organizing my house. That means that occasionally when I take photos for the blog around my house, I either sweep aside a LARGE amount of laundry / groceries / craft supplies that never got put away last week, or I blur the background out in the picture so that you can’t see the crumpled paper / dusty books / things to bring to the thrift store that lay piled under in front of the couch.
Secret_lifeThis is the catch-all in our house. Within 15 minutes of the kitchen island being cleared, it starts to accumulate again. Here, we have several bags of the kids’ Halloween candy, my new hat, H’s chickpea jars, the library book that I have yet to start reading, craft supplies, some candles, a cd player, awesome activity dice that I picked up at McDonald’s in the states, H’s meds from last week, and some groceries that haven’t made their way to the pantry downstairs yet. That’s not including the Permanent Residents: the Plant, THE KitchenAid, and the new Power Blender.

I’m not on the level of a hoarder, but I’ve got some serious disorganization going on here, folks, and in the hopes of finding out that I’m not alone, I’m going to take you on a little tour of what’s going on. Please don’t judge me if your house is not like this – I judge myself enough every day when I look at the stuff everywhere!!
Secret_Life_charging_stationWelcome to the Charging Station, and where magazines go to die. I don’t have time to read the mags, let alone sort through which ones should head to the recycling. All the devices have charging cables here. And that Dell that’s hiding on the shelf has been there for almost 6 months. There’s data on it that I need but haven’t bothered to get off of it yet. Also, it’s where the ‘facial tissues’ live. Anyone have a 2 year old in the house? Then you’ll understand why, no matter how many times a day I pick up kleenexes, there’s always another on the ground 2 minutes later

This is just one level of my house. I show this to let you know that, like banner of our blog says, we’re not super moms. Sure, I made poppies with the kids yesterday for Remembrance Day, but did I actually have time to put the bottle of paint & paint brushes away before I ran off to do other things? Nope. I’m not excusing it – but right now, it’s a bit of reality in our house. I’m not happy with it – but I’d rather it be cluttered and it be a space that we all live in rather than it be a model home in which we simply exist!
secret_life_entrywayAh, the entryway. We have a 3’x5′ space in our house that shepherds four people and a dog in and out all day long. WHO THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD DESIGN?!

So please, now that you’ve seen my house, don’t ever apologize for your near-pristine house the next time I pop over – or I’ll know that you think I live in a pig sty!!

I live in Hamilton, Ontario, and love my city. I'm a Netflixer, choral music geek, bookworm, inventor of recipes (I take Artistic Licence on EVERYTHING that I make), wife of one, mother of two, and owner of a neurotic Schnauzer. I respect people who respect others. I love good food that's well done, but my favourite lunch is KD & hotdogs. With ketchup. I'm addicted to Clearance Shopping. I will ALWAYS get the product that I want at the price that I want, eventually.

  1. We’re not super moms either. Thank godness for bokeh. Yesterday to take a picture of my DIY Light Tent, I cleared the following off the kitchen table: vitamin basket, 3 bibs, my laptop, 3 dead holiday centrepieces with trivet, a pony tail elastic, and 4 bobby pins.

I may have to post my disaster soon – although my husband would be horrified.

  2. My house is filled with clutter too and I’m not a blogger. I’m a stay at home mom who would rather use her spare time to do things, like spend time with the kids, take a nap when the older 3 are at school, etc. Most of the clutter is just life and I’m not going to stop that just to keep my house prestine.

  3. Ha ha! I. So. Get. You. Everything has a place and everything in its place? Um yeah. Okay.

  4. I’m really glad you’ve posted this. For a long time now, and especially since I’ve started my own blog, I’ve been thinking that you, Jenn, are super mom. How do you do it? Where do you find time to look for crafts and recipes and go shopping and blog about it? How?? I’m so glad to see that you can’t keep it all up either. It is definitely true that when you choose to do one thing, something else has to give. I’m just really glad you post things for me to try with the kids or recipes to make because I don’t have to look for it myself. I did do the poppy craft and it was great. I wouldn’t have done anything if you hadn’t posted it.
I constantly battle the clutter around here. It drives me crazy most of the time, but it is impossible with little kids to keep it looking good all the time. Some days I dedicate to cleaning, but most days are filled with seizing the moment and doing what I think is best for the kids at that time. Maybe some day our house will look the way we think it should?

  5. I love it! I am planning to show my husband your beautiful house and tell him it is a job hazard. Thanks for sharing.
