For the past number of months, our front-loading washer was working fine, but every now and then a load would come out really smelly. I have been doing everything correctly, always leaving the door open between loads, and running a “clean washer” cycle once a month. It was frustrating, then, that clothes didn’t always seem fresh. But then one day last week, in the middle of a cycle, I got a random series of beeps, and the machine quit working. Half full of water. With the door locked. SERIOUSLY!
There was a bunch of soccer clothes stuck in there that I knew we’d need soon, and a lot of socks and underwear that the boys were running out of. There was no display on our washer, so I tried a random combination of restarting, unplugging, and pushing buttons. After a day or two with no luck, I got a little concerned, so I called a repair guy. He couldn’t come for almost a week, because I had to work and was not home during regular business hours.
I had almost resigned myself to the fact that the clothes would be ruined, and was only hoping for a very small repair bill, when I was encouraged by friends to do some YouTube searches. I was able to find a very similar model with a similar problem.
I watched the video a few times, and enlisted my husband to do the “dirty work” after I had figured out how to open the door.
We removed the front panel, unscrewed a section, and found a giant mess of a sock, dog hair, lego pieces, and some coins, all gunked together into a mouldy black ball. I dumped that out, rinsed it like crazy (did it EVER smell!), and ran another “clean washer” cycle on the machine. BINGO! Problem solved! The washer ran like a dream, quieter than before! I was also able to salvage that original load before it was ruined! Bonus!
AND we saved ourselves the cost of a repairman’s service call!
There is SO much information out there. Take some time to search YouTube, Google, or eHow for some tips. It also helps to read the comments people have left, and to leave your own comments about what worked or didn’t.
Some words of advice: Do extensive research before attempting a repair. Certain activities may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Make sure you are comfortable with what you are doing. Avoid any electrical issues, and be safe, at all costs.
Have you done your own repairs using the internet?

My husband has fixed TONS of things around the house by watching YouTube videos.
Couldn’t agree with you more. My husband goes on YouTube before calling for repairs. He’s fixed our washer and dryer multiple times. He’s not the handiest person and still manages to fix things thanks to YouTube tutorials! 🙂
hahaha… So I’m not the only one who does this! 🙂
YES!!! My boyfriend took his van into a mechanic about a problem and they couldn’t find anything. He did a little research himself, found the same problem as being common to that year’s vehicle. He ordered the part and installed it himself for like a total of $30!
Oh I can’t agree more! Have learned so much on YouTube. Gotta love the way we all share information this day in age.
So true! When we need to fix something, my husband tries to look for some videos on youtube first. If he thinks he can do it, there’s no need to hire a pro.
