Last November, I took a lovely road trip with my fellow Wine & Cheesy Book Club ladies to Ithaca, New York, the main purpose of which was to spend some quality fun time with a former co-worker. One of my goals during said trip was to acquire a newly launched product only available in the states: Reese chocolate peanut butter cup spread. Yum.
Or at least, I was pretty sure that it’d be Yum. It’s hard to tell – chocolate and peanut butter is a glorious mix, but they can sometimes hide each other’s best qualities if not balanced perfectly. And I’ve had several other chocolatebar-turned-spreads – when I was living in England in 2004, I had Mars spread and Snickers spread – the Snickers held up nicely, but the Mars spread was a bit of a disappointment. {Side note: does anyone know if that stuff is still made?}
Sadly, I couldn’t find any Reeses spread in the stores that we visited. During the year, I picked up a jar of Kraft Chocolate Peanut Butter, but it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be – we still have a half uneaten jar in the cupboard.
Earlier this fall, I started to see blog posts everywhere claiming that Reese spread had landed in Canada, but, try as I might, I didn’t see it at any of my local retailers until Sunday afternoon. No sooner had I spotted the jar than it was in my cart.
When I got home, the first thing that I did after dropping the grocery bags on the kitchen floor was dig out the coveted orange and yellow jar and rip the seal off the top.
Let me tell you one thing: Reese spread didn’t meet my expectations.
It flew past them. Wow. It’s SO GOOD. I meant to take one spoonful to try, and then I’d leave the rest until I could take some pictures…. Yup. That didn’t happen. Not only can you taste the chocolate and the peanut butter, but they’ve even made it just a wee tiny bit crunchy, like the peanut butter filling in the cups.
I know that Nutella is currently the darling of Pinterest and Stay at Home Moms everywhere, but I’m kicking the hazelnuts to the curb – Reeses spread is my new guilty pleasure.
I’m proud that I’ve managed to not eat the entire jar and it’s been in the house for 30 hours now.
On another note, I’m not sure I’ll be buying this very often – I looked at the nutritional information, and 1 serving = 1 Tablespoon. Are you kidding? I don’t think my willpower can handle it. My willpower thinks that 1 serving = 1/2 cup. And considering the fact that there’s 19g of sugar in each serving…. well, let’s just say it’ll be a special treat in this house.
I hope it’s pretty clear that this isn’t a sponsored post. I’m just a girl… standing in front of a jar of chooclate peanut butter spread… asking it where it’s been all my life.

I should try this – I am not a fan of Nutella (I don’t like hazelenuts) but I DO love PB and Chocolate!
I almost did a happy dance in the Sobey’s store when I found this gem! You hit the nail on the head. Both peanut butter AND chocolate in every spoonful. I did manage to make some cookies, but I have to admit I dipped a spoon in more times than I care to remember!
I have been meaning to try this stuff!
Do it… doooo iiiiiiit….
I have had a jar in my cupboard for weeks and have yet to try it. After reading this post, I don’t think my willpower is going to hold out for much longer…
HOW DID YOU NOT OPEN IT RIGHT WHEN YOU GOT HOME FROM THE STORE?!
I am going to pretend that I didn’t read this post and that you didn’t love this. Because otherwise I am going to NEED it.
Thanks for sharing; now I need to find me some!
Hi Jenn,
I’m an expat guy born in St.Kitts a long time ago and retired here in Thailand. I just bought a jar of the Reese’s spread today but haven’t tasted it yet. I have Nutella in stock but I love Reese’s cup original.
It cost over $ 8 cdn for the 13 0z jar..imported stuff is expensive here.
Why I am sending this is because I really like your sense of humor when you say things like ( 1 serving = 1 Tablespoon. Are you kidding?) that got me laughing .
I think that you are a good writer and maybe you should consider some stories/reports/items concerning food? or incorporating your natural sense of humor .(are you kidding) YES..! lol good luck
