You Pinspire Me
A few weeks ago, we hosted a neighbourhood {well, really, a ‘neighbour’} BBQ at our house. We’ve had a couple new neighbours move in over the last year, so it was great to connect with them (no one was connecting much over the winter that we just had!) and break bread (and drink beer) together! Upon hearing that I have a new Android phone (I won a beeyoutiful HTC OneM8 from Rogers for Mother’s Day!) and that I was unhappy with the ringtone choices for Android, our newest neighbour, Justin, told me that I needed to download the Zedge app. Dutifully, I did. And I drove Brian crazy over the next 24 hours trying out all of the different ringtones and notification sounds.
One of the cool things about Zedge is that it’s kind of a database of all free things for Android phones. Sounds, wallpapers, games, etc. It was Zedge that led me to my latest obsession: QuizUp. QuizUp describes itself as the biggest trivia game in the world, and I believe them. It’s been less than 48 hours since I downloaded the game, and I’ve played a LOT of rounds in over 20 different categories so far (and I haven’t even gotten close to exhausting the selection), and I’ve always been matched up with another player in less than 1 minute. According to Wikipedia, as of May 2014, QuizUp had more than 20,000,000 users. Now they have at least 20,000,002, if you count me & Brian. 🙂 In less than 3 hours, we (I say ‘we’ because Brian and I spent the first 2 hours after download playing as a pair) received an achievement for playing with players from all inhabited continents. Now, how cool is that for sitting on the couch, playing trivia games?!
Basically, what happens is this: You choose a category (everything from Amusement Parks to FIFA World Cup to French to Christmas to Grammar [and literally everything in between]), QuizUp connects you with another player, anywhere in the world, who has recently chosen the same category to play. You will have to answer 7 rounds of multiple choice questions on a single subject. You have 10 seconds to answer the question, and receive more points the faster you answer. If you end the match with more points than your opponent, you’ll get bonus points, which will all go towards your score in that category.
I’ve played a lot {read: too many} games in the last 36 or so hours, and I’ve only gotten a repeat question a couple times – so the variety of questions in each category seems to be pretty wide.
I like to think that spending a hour playing QuizUp is exercise for my brain. I have to ready the questions quickly, call up info from different little corners from my brain, and make the selection. I’m told that you can connect with friends, then challenge them to duels of knowledge – come find me, let’s get our trivia on! My screen name is Pinspired.

I’d like to “thank” you for this post. I’ve been really enjoying this app a lot, in reasonable doses, when I have a moment or two. I love that each quiz is so short, and that there is such variety in topics! My husband, however, does not appreciate variety, or reasonableness in general. He is the current reigning Canadian champion of Netherlands Football Trivia. You know, among all the Canadians who play QuizUp. Quite the dream come true, there. And he’s hanging on to that title, no matter how much neglect the rest of his life faces!
