Traditionally, I abstain from making promises about drastic life changes on the eve of a New Year. I don’t like falling short of goals that I set for myself. I don’t like being disappointed in myself. Because, let’s face it – no matter how good the intentions, adding an extra ‘beneficial’ behaviours to an already busy day spells long-term failure for me.
Yes, I love my green smoothies for breakfast, but when I’m making lunches and feeding everyone breakfast before marshaling them into snow suits and dragging them out the door to get to school on time, grabbing a granola bar eases just a wee bit of the stress of the morning. I know that working out every day – or even a few times a week! – would be good for me physically AND mentally, but come on – when the kids are finally quiet in bed and the dishwasher is loaded and running, the last thing that I need is “I should be going to the gym” guilt resting on my shoulders as I sink into the couch.
And so, I’ve decided to grant myself a gift this year with my resolution: every day, I will spend (at least) an hour doing what ever I want to do. Some days, that means reading a book. Some days, that might mean locking the only bathroom in the house and taking a hot bath with absolutely no interruptions. Some days, that might just mean walking the dog at sunset by the waterfront. Some days I might even use that time to exercise my brain muscles with the Fit Brains Trainer app on my super sweet new Apple TV 4 (thank you, Netflix!!) or get myself into a Top Ten in Canada rank in some category of QuizUp.
However. One of the more regular ways that I’ve been meeting this resolution this month has been, not surprisingly, Netflix. I’ve given myself permission to take a break during nap time to be completely unproductive. And I’m FINALLY watching The Good Wife. Guilt free. (Well, maybe just a wee bit of guilt, because my husband and I were going to watch it together some day… but who knows when that’d be?!)
It was a pretty easy resolution to make, and it’s not too hard to keep:
I resolve to give myself an hour of my time every day.
Just like that. There’s no internal struggle with this one and, while it might seem a wee bit selfish & self indulgent, it’s really just following advice that everyone gives young moms – that trite, “make sure that you make time for you!” So, what’s stopping you? Take back your time.
Need a few new things to add to your Netflix list?
On another note, we’d like to thank the awesome folks at Netflix for inviting us back to the #StreamTeam for our third year – we continue to feel honoured to be representing one of our favourite companies!
