One Dollar Sanity Saver – Keeping Kids Occupied

These days I don’t carry a diaper bag around with me anymore (hurray!!!). And while I’m thrilled with not having to lug all that stuff around, I do miss a few things. First of all, having wipes around – they were great for everything!  Second is having something to give the kids to occupy them if we’re waiting – at the doctor’s office, in the grocery store, or even stuck in traffic. So here is a fun way I’ve solved that problem – my one dollar sanity-saver!

One dollar sanity saver

The second hand stores have small bags of assorted toys for a dollar (or more at Value Village). It’s the perfect way to get a bunch of “new” un-played-with toys for next to nothing. Stick the bag in a drawer, and take out 2-4 small toys to tuck in the bottom of your purse. The next time you need a way to distract your child, instead of handing them a phone or tablet, pull out one of the “new” toys!

This has come in handy numerous times over the years, especially with all the LONG Emergency Room visits with my sick little preemie. It’s also nice to give a toy to another parent who seems like their child needs something too!

I live in Bowmanville, and am a mom to four young boys - it can get a little loud in my house. I am a Christian, a part-time French teacher, a piano teacher and former homeschooler. I love finding the best deals, which will come in handy when our boys become hungry teenagers! We just moved to a house with more outdoor space, and I'm still getting used to life in the country (a walk around the block is a lot longer here!).

  1. Such a good idea. I often then of snacks before toys as “sanity savers” for little ones. My kids are out of that “kiddie” stage now but I totally remember those days of needing things to distract them when they are fussing.

  2. I’m not toting along a diaper bag any longer either, but everything now seems to be stuffed into my purse (ahem, I mean giant sized tote?) lol I too keep all sorts of weird stuff in there to keep the kids occupied when we have to wait somewhere!

  3. It’s such a nice feeling when you finally graduate at a certain stage. It feels like you’ve leveled up. I would always feel this way when my twins and I get over a phase.

The toys are definitely a good idea!

  4. This is a good idea! I have to admit though, I wouldn’t give mine a toy unless they were behaving. I don’t like rewarding bad behavior. I learned that lesson with my oldest lol

  5. I usually let my kids choose the toys they like to bring when we have to wait somewhere.

  6. What a great idea. A bag like that would definitely keep my kids quiet while we’re waiting somewhere.

  7. I’m glad it’s come in handy. And I know the preemie story so well. Our niece was born a preemie last year and it was so touch and go for awhile. Thankfully it was worth all that hospital time, she’s flourishing now. 🙂
