You Pinspire Me
The first apartment that we lived in had mice. We took out the garbage on a regular basis, we kept the green bin clean, we cleaned the stove top daily, we washed the dishes every night, we kept food in airtight containers, but still, the mice came. I chalk it up mostly to the fact that the house was incredibly old and the folks who lived downstairs had a habit of keeping their place like a pigsty. At any rate, the little creatures were not strangers in our home and more than one of my girlfriends jumped up on the sofa when a little shadow streaked through the livingroom.
I read a lot about mice and how to keep them at bay and one of the most interesting things that I learned along the way was that mice don’t like peppermint oil! I soaked cotton balls in peppermint oil & left them in spots that I knew the mice to be frequenting – I knew that they wouldn’t stay out of our house, since the downstairs folks didn’t seem to be moving out anytime soon, but my hope was that I could at least keep them at bay in our apartment. Guess what? It worked!
Thankfully, since moving to our current house, we haven’t had to deal with mice since. This fun little factoid popped to mind this week, however, because I was cleaning the floor (I know, RIGHT?) with this new floor cleaner, Simply Floored! by Better Life. It’s citrus mint scented, and as I scrubbed, I thought, hey, I wonder if THIS would deter the mice, too? It smells wonderful. So unlike the other floor cleaners that I’ve tried. To be honest, I know that it probably wouldn’t deter the mice because the oil needs to be highly concentrated, but still. It’s got peppermint oil in it, which makes me believe that it’s warding off the little intruders. Plus, ants avoid peppermint, so that’s an added bonus.
Better Life has a whole line of green cleaning products with clever names – the All Purpose “what-EVER” cleaner, “Dish it Out” detergent, “Automatic Magic” diswasher deterg, “Even the Kitchen Sink” bathroom & kitchen cleaner, “Take it for Granite” countertop cleaner, “Einshine” stainless steel cleaner, “I Can See Clearly, WOW!” glass cleaner, “Spin Credible” laundry detergent, and that’s not even all! All of these products are available at Target across Canada – which is handy, since, as you all know, I make it a practice to be in Target more often than not. 😉
Their products are green, but as they say on the website, green products aren’t always healthy! {Think: Poison Ivy: Very Green and 100% Natural. Nice to slather on the skin? Not so much.} HOWEVER. Better Life has decided that they don’t want to have to put any warning labels on their products. (Though they do recommend against drinking any of their products, which I can totally get behind.) I love not having to worry about the kids licking the floor (don’t even ask) or burning their skin with the cleaning products if they grab the bottles from the cupboards.
The scents of the products come from essential oils as opposed to fragrance, perfumes or fragrance oil blends, and I have to hand it to them, they’ve come up with some fantastic scents! I’ve already mentioned the citrus-mint, but the dish detergent comes in a clary sage & citrus, which is strangely pleasing.
I’ll be honest, the dishwasher detergent didn’t work for us, but you’ve heard about my dishwasher woes before, and to this day there’s only one solution to our problem. I was pleased with the rest of the products – they stood up to their less-child-friendly competitors and smelled awfully good to boot!

I want to try Simply Floored – we are moving to a new house and clean floors make such a difference! Plus, with a toddler it’s nice to have natural products down on the ground. 🙂
