I fell in love with Clodhoppers several years ago after I saw a documentary on TV about the family who made them. I hadn’t heard of them before, so before my next shift at Ira Lee’s, the sandwich & salad fast food joint in the mall that was my job for all four years through highschool, I picked up a bag of the chocolate Clodhoppers and was immediately hooked. (FYI, working in a Mall is NOT a good way for a teenager to make & save money. Sure, I did SAVE during the four years I worked there, but I BOUGHT SO MUCH STUFF because there were ALWAYS SALES on in some store or another!)
There’s just something about cookies and wonderful things smothered in milk chocolate in convenient bite-sized pieces… I’ll be honest, this isn’t really true to the chocolate Clodhoppers recipe, but I’ve taken the spirit behind the candy and added some of my own favourite things.
This is truly one of the easiest ‘Christmas Baking’ treats that I’ve ever made, and this one is going to make its way into my regular roster. I’ll probably double or triple when I bring it to a party, because it is just SO GOOD, it’ll disappear in an instant. It’s nice to have a few no-bake Christmas baking recipes, too, to make the best use of your time when the oven is already in use.
- 260 g melting milk chocolate (I purchased a block from the Bulk Barn)
- 1/2 cup graham crackers (or teddy grahams), chopped
- 1/2 cup pretzels, chopped
- 1/2 cup chocolate chip cookies, chopped
- 1/2 cup crispy rice cereal
- 1/4 cup sunflower seeds
- 1/4 cup toffee / Skor bits
- Melt chocolate in a double broiler over simmering water on the stove.
- Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine all ingredients.
- Distribute evenly over the parchment paper, separating into smaller (bite-sized) chunks.
- Place the sheet into the fridge for 20 minutes, or until chocolate is firm. Store in airtight containers (in the fridge, if you keep your house really warm in the winter months).
- This recipe is HIGHLY adaptable! Don't like sunflower seeds? Sub in chopped almonds or extra graham crackers! Don't add anything you don't like - the more you like the separate ingredients, the more you'll LOVE the final product!
- Consider sprinkling the finished product with a bit of sea salt before cooling it in the fridge!

You can add all kinds of healthy things too – hemp hearts and chia seeds, if you want to sneak them into your kids (or make yourself feel better about eating it!!)
