In those years of getting up with unhappy babies, and nursing babies around the clock, I got to know all those infomercials really well. The Magic Bullet! The H2O Vac. Dr. Ho’s Neck Comfortor! And each time I watched them, my baby-brain convinced me that I needed every one of those products. The Wen Haircare system! Fancy knives! But of course, I could never bring myself to spend that kind of money on those products. But they are on my mental list for Garage Sales and Thrift Stores. If I can find one of those products to try for a few dollars, it’s definitely worth that kind of investment.
So I was at Bibles For Missions yesterday, looking at their BreadMakers, and happened to see a Jack Lalanne Power Juicer Classic. It looked to be in really good condition, hardly used. No manual, but I plugged it in, and it made a noise. So for $5, I figured I’d give it a try! These usually sell for $100-150. Do you remember his infomercial? This 90 year old man that does various strength feats to celebrate his birthday. Apparently this juicer gives more juice than any other juicer, and leaves less pulp behind.
I got it home, and went online, only to find that it was missing 3 parts. One was kind of like a little screwdriver to take out the blade, and some Googling helped me see that I could use some chopsticks to remove it. The second was the pusher – to push the food through the opening. I used the one from my food processor, and that wasn’t too bad. The third was the collector bin for the pulp. I thought maybe I could just put a bowl there, but the pulp comes out pretty quickly, and it makes a bit of a mess.
But I tried it, and it worked. I made a delicious glass of apple/grape/carrot juice, and it looked just like the infomercial!
I don’t see myself using it on a regular basis – it seems a bit wasteful. But it is great to have on hand when I get a bunch of fruit/veggies on clearance and need to use them right away, or when I feel like I need some extra fruits/veggies in my diet. And really, for $5, I couldn’t not try it!
Have you gotten any great deals this week? Have you ever bought something from an infomercial?

That is a really good deal! I braved the Value Village 50% off sale. I got there right and 9 am when they opened. I had specific clothing items that I wanted to look for, so I only stuck to the areas of the store where I could find them. After the shopping, it worked out to paying $2/item! Plus the added bonus is that I only bought name brands!
Awesome deals!! That’s the great thing about having time to look for the good stuff when thrift shopping!
Juicers are great if you have the time but coffee takes less time to make. Great post.
So true. And coffee is just so nice…especially in the morning! 🙂
Hi Marya. That is definitely not bad for $5. I’ve been thinking of investing in a juicer since I’ve been eating healthier but just not sure I’d actually use it. And I’ve always been tempted to try the Wen Hair products!
I know – Wen looks really interesting! I think the juicer would be worth it if you can get it pretty cheap. Not sure that a full price juicer is worth the money. Thanks for stopping by!
That looks like a fab juicer!
I’m pretty excited about it!
I use ours to make apple cider in the fall – if you have a cheap or free apple supply it is awesome! And you can freeze it in ziploc bags for later!
Ooh – that’s a great idea!
