Fruit Fly Solutions

Every summer I end up with those pesky fruit flies in my kitchen.  It usually happens because I’ve been too lazy putting the composting out, or letting some fruit rot on the counter. Either way, my kitchen ends up full of these little guys, and I find myself searching for fruit fly solutions.  I went to our helpful Facebook community asking for help on our page (www.facebook.com/youpinspireme).  We got so many great suggestions of what does and does not work, so I thought I would share them here, for anyone else facing the same issue.

Fruit fly solutions for those pesky bugs!

1. Ditch all the old fruit. Store food in the fridge, and pour boiling water into the drain at night to remove any food residue. Empty garbage bins frequently, and deal with compost right away.

2. Use a container covered with saran wrap with holes poked in it so the flies get in but can’t get out.  You could fill it with chunks of fruit, white wine, or apple cider vinegar.

3. Same as above, but put a paper cone in the jar, creating a small opening, and making it difficult to get out.

4. A bowl of apple cider vinegar with a squirt of Dawn dish soap.  They like the smell of the vinegar, but get trapped by the soap and drown.

5. Vacuum them up.  Quick and satisfying! This was the one that really worked for us this time.

Any combination of the above fruit fly solutions should solve your problem, but keep it up! They can come back so easily if you are not on the ball!

Have you tried any of these? Do they work or not? Is there a solution that I’ve missed?

I live in Bowmanville, and am a mom to four young boys - it can get a little loud in my house. I am a Christian, a part-time French teacher, a piano teacher and former homeschooler. I love finding the best deals, which will come in handy when our boys become hungry teenagers! We just moved to a house with more outdoor space, and I'm still getting used to life in the country (a walk around the block is a lot longer here!).

  1. I think you covered all the solutions I have heard about.

  2. This is great to know! I never really thought there was anything I could do about them.

  3. This is very helpful! Having bananas around is the worst culprit for us.

  4. I’ve used the vacuum idea recently. I had mosquitos just hanging out all over my window sill and window.. THe vacuum sucked them right up.

  5. Ugh! We had a hidden fruit fly source one year and they were so hard to get rid of. The source was a bottle of orange juice left leaking in a bag someone left at my house. The solution was your second listed here. It took a few days, but it worked and we didn’t have a problem again.

  6. Always good to have a few extra tips on getting rid of those pesky things. They drive me crazy!

  7. The vacuum cleaner idea is my favorite. It works for all but the largest of bugs.

  8. Fruit flies are so annoying. I have always wondered how to get rid of them.

  9. Eek! You used my suggestion, #4! I do this all summer because they seem to be in my house all summer long as well!

  10. I have tried all of these but vacuuming! What an idea. My fav is the apple cider vinegar in a jar with plastic wrap! Works every time!

  11. The ACV one never worked for me, but I haven’t tried it with the dish soap in it. I’ll have to give it another new and improved try. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this with us in the Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party! Pinning to our group boards.

  12. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SOLUTION…

But…. if you really need them gone quick.. Hairspray, and a lighter works well too sometimes it’s embarrassing if you have company coming over and need them gone A.S.A.P.. I do NOT recommend this it’s highly dangerous, and pretty stupid but works. I’d have someone close by with an extinguisher if your not comfortable doing this… But kills them quick and relieves some stress too 😉

Mainly though all you have to do is keep your place clean, there is always something keeping them around. Check everything, keep everything sealed or outdoors, and they will leave on there own.. they don’t just stick around because they like your home.
