Want to hear what top secret adventure I have been up to this past week?
I had a chance to join several other bloggers at the test kitchen for KFC Canada, where all the recipes are developed and tested. We were brought there (hush, hush) to hear about the history of KFC, and more importantly, to learn about their brand new flavour of chicken: Sweet Chili Crunch. It is the first new chicken flavour in about 6 years, and it’s being released on Monday October 20.
We heard from Ophelia, the woman in charge of creating new flavours (and self-proclaimed “chief food genie”). She talked us though the development process, and how they came to a decision with this new flavour, which is marinated for 12 hours, double-breaded, and drizzled with a Sweet Chili Glaze.
After getting a sneak peek at the new commercial, we headed into the kitchen for an exclusive, behind the scenes look. Not only were we going to taste the new chicken, but we were going to bread it, fry it, and sauce it ourselves! Did you know that every piece of chicken is marinated and hand-breaded on site at every location? It’s not one of those pre-made frozen chunks of meat. The preparation process is extremely specific and intricate, really proving that KFC does things “the Hard Way.” The Hard Way means real food, and real ingredients, freshly-prepared.
After being trained in each step of the preparation, it was time for the best part. EATING!
The chicken looked absolutely delicious. Crispy, golden, and lightly glazed. It tasted just as good as it looked! The extra crispy coating had such a crunch to it. There was a sweetness, along with some heat (but not too much). Because of the long marinating process, the flavour went right into the meat, and left the chicken wonderfully moist.
After a delicious meal, I was presented with my very own certification in preparing Sweet Chili Crunch!
KFC tends to be a food that people associate with certain memories: family get-togethers, picnics, potlucks, or other traditions. It’s also great to pick up on those crazy nights when there is no time to cook! The best part about their new flavour is that you can still order the Original Recipe along with the Sweet Chili Crunch – mix and match in any bucket for free, since this new flavour might be a little spicy for younger kids. We are a KFC family and enjoy their menu! I can’t wait to try out their latest flavor! Sweet Chili Crunch looks and sounds so good!
I haven’t had KFC in ages but I’m really intrigued about that new sweet chili crunch. I’m going to have to check this out the next time I go there.

I haven’t eaten at KFC in a long time! Only because I am cutting down picking up fast food but I always liked KFC. I bet you had a lot of fun in their kitchens and maannnn I may have to try this new chicken when it comes out!

That is awesome you got to partake in such event. How wonderful you got to see how they really prepare and cook their food and you got to do it as well. The last time we were in KFC was last year. It goes to show that we don’t go out to eat as much. Thanks for sharing. Just in case my family feels like eating out, I guess we could check out the KFC.
