Our boys have really been into science stuff lately. Will it sink or float? How long will the cup of snow take to melt? If I bang on the end of this stick, will the HotWheel go flying across the room? (The answer is yes, and it might break something too!). We also learned the joys of vinegar and baking soda! There are so many fun ways to experiment with that, and it always produces impressive results! We love to encourage their creativity, and to pursue their interests, which may lead to future career choices.
I thought I’d share with you one of our favourite science tricks for bitterly cold winter mornings. Again, it’s a simple trick with simple materials, but it produces impressive results.
Boiling Water Trick
Materials needed:
– boiling water
-mug
– extremely cold weather (somewhere in the minus 20s is best).
1. Fill the mug about 1/2 full of boiling water.
2. Position kids safely by a window to observe.
3. Go outside and check for the wind direction (you don’t want this to go back into your face).
4. Throw the water up into the air. Watch the magic happen.
The water will turn to steam, snow & ice, and the kids will be utterly impressed! Again, a warning to watch out for wind direction, and keep kids far away.
Netflix has lots of shows that support children’s curiosity and development. We’ve been really enjoying Sid the Science Kid, because of his fun approach to science and inquiries. SciGirls, Fireman Sam, and Bob the Builder are all really great options as well!

There are some other fun shows for bigger kids about creating your own destiny. Ever After High, Mako Mermaids, and Richie Rich have all recently premiered on Netflix, and are great shows encouraging kids to follow their dreams.

What fun things have your kids been up to lately? How do you encourage them to follow their interests and their dreams?

I live in Bowmanville, and am a mom to four young boys - it can get a little loud in my house. I am a Christian, a part-time French teacher, a piano teacher and former homeschooler. I love finding the best deals, which will come in handy when our boys become hungry teenagers! We just moved to a house with more outdoor space, and I'm still getting used to life in the country (a walk around the block is a lot longer here!).

You Pinspire Me

Our kids are just coming off school vacation and we watched a lot of Netflix while they were home.
I liked giving them opportunities to try new things. If they liked it, great, but if not, they could try something else. They found several hobbies they enjoyed that way and we’ll see if it translates to their destiny!
I saw some celebrity do this on Letterman year’s ago. It might be cold enough tomorrow to try it.
I’ve never seen that version of Richie Rich. Now I’m super curious about it.
I really want to try this. Sounds really cool!
Yep- I did same trick with my boys where they were little 🙂 Way to go momma!
Never seen this but definitely want to try it! Thanks for sharing!
We love Netflix! My girls love experiments!
thanks for sharing….my daughter would love to try it. She loves science experiment.
We watch Netflix all the time here! So much better and cheaper than cable in my opinion!
My daughter prefers Netflix to anything else. She like the programming there & so do I. There are many more options that seem more appropriate & geared toward learning. We love Art & Music on Netflix.
We watch netflix ALL the time!
I think it’s so cool to try out science projects with the kids. This looks like a fun one too with information from a Netflix film or more in the mix.
