There’s something that I haven’t been able to figure out yet, perhaps you can help me with this: Why are almost all of the Christmas / Holiday / Winter dresses for Toddlers sleeveless?
I understand why Christmas dresses for women are sleeveless: it looks far more elegant and quite a bit more sexy than their long-sleeved counter-parts. For the life of me, I can NOT understand why Christmas, Holiday, & Winter dresses for infants and young girls are sleeveless. IT IS COLD OUTSIDE AT CHRISTMAS IN ONTARIO, PEOPLE! Heck, it’s even cold inside at Christmas if you’re trying to save on your heating costs! I know, I know, you conveniently sell beautiful matching sweaters that I can buy to go along with the gorgeous red & gold plaid dresses, but what if my daughter REFUSES to wear a sweater? What then, retailers & designers, WHAT THEN? Children shouldn’t have to suffer for the sake of fashion as we (silly) adults choose to do. Just because they want to wear a pretty party dress doesn’t mean that they should have to shiver in a room that isn’t tropical!
I’ve tried putting button up shirts or turtle necks under the dresses, but they just look really dumb like that. And some of us look for multiple dresses for the winter, because we go to church every Sunday. Do you know how many of my 2 year old daughter’s dresses for this season have sleeves on them? None. Zero. ZILCH.
Guess what? My 2 year old doesn’t need to look elegant, and she certainly doesn’t need to look sexy. Let’s talk about comfort, practicality, & cuteness – with a touch of glam for the holidays. Any long sleeve dresses that I have found in the stores are more play clothes-worthy, less dress clothes worthy. That is, unless I decide to shop at the GAP, because they get “Toddler Style”. Too bad I can’t afford their prices in my budget.

So glad I have a boy. 🙂
I’ve wondered the same thing! Personally I don’t understand the fancy holiday dresses. Most of the ones that I’ve come across are not made of material that is kid friendly. They either need to be dry cleaned or are cold water/gentle cycle. Anything that can’t be washed and dried with my regular clothes is not suitable for a child in my opinion.
Excellent point! I’ve always wondered that.
You can shop at Gap! I do it often. Find a factory outlet and get on the list to get emails. They have amazing deals often! I can find clothes at Gap for my son and daughter cheaper then most second hand stores will sell them. It’s all about timing there but the quality of the clothes is so high it is worth checking it out often. I go to the one in Peterborough which I am usually very successful at, or the one in Ajax. The one in Cambridge is really good too.
I just came across your blog and it is enjoyable reading, especially since we share the same background. When my daughters were little, sleeves were not a problem because I am an avid sewer and I always put long sleeves on winter dresses! But I have noticed the lack of sleeves on dresses for little girls. It cannot be to save on fabric because little girl’s dresses require so little extra for sleeves. And matching sweaters are just not there. When I babysit in the nursery I feel sorry for little girls who do not have a little white sweater on with their dress.
I am so happy that you found our blog, Wilma – thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! I learned the basics of sewing when I was growing up, but I am certainly not skilled enough to sew clothes (other than pj pants!!). Also, on behalf of the nursery coordinator in your church, thanks for volunteering!! It’s like pulling teeth to get volunteers in our nursery who aren’t parents of the kids IN the nursery!! 🙂
