Canada Day Dessert: Red & White Chocolate-drizzled Dessert Kababs

I was asked last week to make some treats for a friend’s 30th birthday part that took place last night.  I wasn’t sure what to make, other than treats that I make for every Christmas party, but I wanted to do something a little different.
Can you believe that it took me five whole minutes to think of going to check my Pinterest boards, “Things to Bake” and “Grown Up Party Ideas”?!  Well, once I hit the party ideas board, I knew what I wanted to make.  Simple, ridiculously easy, and super pretty looking – strawberry angel food cake skewers – I found the photo idea here! These work great for a Canada Day dessert, and you could easily make a Fourth of July dessert with them by adding in blackberries or blueberries! 

It takes 7 easy steps:
1) Bake or buy an Angel Food Cake – I made one from scratch one time – it took FOREVER and tasted delicious but didn’t look great.  Next time, I made one from a Betty Crocker box mix, and it is one of the only cakes, in my humble opinion, that tastes exactly the same made from scratch as it does from a box – only difference being it takes a grand total of 3 minutes to make from a box versus the 25 minutes from scratch (plus baking times, of course!)! 
2) Cut Angel Food Cake into ~ 2″x 2″ squares
3) Wash a tub of strawberries, stem them, and cut in half
4) Put cake and strawberries onto skewers in an alternating order
5) Melt a handful of chocolate chips with a tsp of coconut oil in a double broiler on the stove. 
6) Put melted chocolate into ziplock bag and snip a small corner off.  
7) Line up skewers in a row on the counter on parchment or wax paper or aluminum foil, and drizzle chocolate back and forth and back and forth over the skewers.

 Once the Chocolate has hardened a bit, you’re ready to go!  Believe me when I say that these went over very well at the party – as soon as I arrived with them in hand, I started getting compliments, and they were the very first thing on the table to disappear!

*just a tip* Don’t make them too far in advance – you want your berries to still be crisp and juicy, and you don’t want your angel food cake to dry out from sitting out or get soggy from the berries!
