I was rifling through the last three years of our digital storage, looking for a particular photo that I KNEW that I took, when I realized something – I don’t take many videos of the kids. I take a lot of pictures – and by “a lot”, I actually mean “an insane amount.” What I don’t do is hit record & capture their cute pre-schooler conversations just for fun. I don’t make a record of their funny laugh or crazy squeals. I’ve resolved to start using my video capture more often.
I have also discovered the OneDay app. This instant movie maker gives you the ability to make one of those cute, well-edited videos of your kids that features them being themselves at that particular moment in time. It’s an interview format – you read your child the question, then press the record button, and they answer – or smile, or cry, or whatever, you press the stop button, and repeat with the next question! Even when your child is being a pain in the butt, the video still ends up being very charming! (You can, of course, go back and re-record the questions that your child didn’t do well with, but that’s kinda what I love about this…) Take a look at my darling daughter’s video as proof:
I love using this app with my son in particular. He’s what you might call a “talkative” 3 year old. He started using his words at about 18 months and hasn’t looked back since. Don’t believe me? Here’s a conversation that I had with him in June… (thanks, facebook, for helping me keep track!!)
Hendrik: Why are your ears tired of listening?
Me: Because you’ve talked an awful lot today.
Hendrik: I didn’t talk a lot. I talk because I need to talk because I need to practice so I can talk like a 3 year old does, because I’m a big boy and I know how to use a lot of words, but Anneke doesn’t know how to use a lot of words yet because she’s not a big big big girl yet. Mommy, why are you putting a plain pillow case on my pillow? You put a polka-dotted sheet on my bed, so I need to have a polka-dotted pillow case to match, because right now it doesn’t match. Is my polka-dotted pillow case in the laundry, waiting to be washed? I suppose it’s ok if I have a plain pillow case. But when I’m big big big, will my fingers grow so that they reach all the way into the end of my baseball glove, so I can wear it and play baseball with Grandma Gina and Mr. Bergstra? Do you remember when we went to the baseball stadium and I got to run run run all the way around the bases and have a race with the big kids? {ad nauseam} …..
ANYWHO. Using the OneDay app gives Hendrik the chance to talk and gives me the chance to get a word in here and there, as well as record it for posterity’s sake. One thing that I’ve learned in the past month that we’ve been using this app is that when Hendrik stops talking, he’s not actually finished his thought. If I just sit quietly for a few seconds and allow the “dead air”, he’ll elaborate on the topic at hand.
I have it on good authority that the grandparents love the videos that I make with this app, too, because they are perfect for showing off their ‘angelic’ grandchildren to all the friends! I admit…. I was skeptical about how well the videos would turn out with a not-super verbal 2 year old, but I think they ended up pretty cute. (I know, I’m biased – just wait until YOUR child is the star of your OneDay video – you’ll see what I mean!!)
The real kicker for me is that there’s a whole section of interviews that you can do yourself for your kids – about their birth story, what they were like when they were a baby… I’m not putting mine up here because I am most definitely not the cutest subject in the world, nor am I the best in front of a camera. Why am I making them, then? Let’s face it – none of us knows how long we’re going to be around. If I got hit by a bus tomorrow, how awesome would it be for the kids to have a whole chapter of interviews with me about them to look back on? shoot… I just killed the mood, didn’t I…
