A Month of Less: The Junk Drawer

Somehow, since we’ve moved into a kitchen with more cupboard space, I’ve gone from one “junk drawer” to one “main” one and two extras.  Do I really need 3 drawers for random things?  No.  Now I just have to do something about it.  Organize, and throw stuff out!

Here’s our two main “junk” drawers.  I went through, dumped them out.  Threw out tons of garbage.  Found 8 non-working pens.  Recycled some papers.  Sorted old and new batteries. And for some reason, I fount 19 clothespins in there!

 Here’s the result.  Much better!

This other drawer was originally for saran wrap and foil, etc, but it has become a miscellaneous drawer also.

And the “after” – so much better. I’m not quite sure what to do with the rest of the drawer.  I know that if I leave that space empty, it will collect junk.  I’ll have to think about it.

So – do you have a junk drawer (or three) in your kitchen?  What I finds that helps immensely is little plastic containers for separating things (batteries, chargers, elastics, etc.)  Good luck!

I live in Bowmanville, and am a mom to four young boys - it can get a little loud in my house. I am a Christian, a part-time French teacher, a piano teacher and former homeschooler. I love finding the best deals, which will come in handy when our boys become hungry teenagers! We just moved to a house with more outdoor space, and I'm still getting used to life in the country (a walk around the block is a lot longer here!).

  1. Great work! What about placing the containers at the front instead of at the back? You´ll have quicker access and won´t be as tempted to fill the empty space either.
I have just joined Pinterest so this blog will be interesting for me. 😀

  3. Yep, full of paperwork, mail, and other “stuff”… gotta get myself organized.

    • I really have to find a good solution for paperwork. Any thoughts, anyone?

    • I haven’t tried it yet, but I was thinking of getting myself a large binder and putting those clear paper protectors inside and using each one to throw papers/bills etc. in to at least separate them/organize them a bit more. Probably will have one for school papers, one for “needs immediate attention” (bills, important documents, etc.), and one for “randoms”. I’m actually impressed you only have a few “junk” drawers. I think I have about 3 “junk” drawers/cupboards,/baskets in every room ;). Definitely need to de-clutter over here!
